Chennai • Chief Minister of Indian state Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi yesterday assured a delegation of Sri Lankan Tamil MPs, who sought his help in ending civilian killings in the island nation, that he “would take up their case with the Indian government”.
According to the Sri Lankan MPs, the chief minister “was aware of the situation in north Sri Lanka's Tamil dominated areas”.
The MPs from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) also sought the reopening of a highway linking Jaffna peninsula in the north of the island with the mainland. Colombo closed it in August citing security reasons.
They called on the chief minister at his residence and spent about an hour discussing the situation in Sri Lanka, where surging violence has left over 3,000 people dead this year.
