Teen newlywed dead in dumpster
By JONATHAN JENKINS, TORONTO SUN
The love marriage of a Toronto courier and a beautiful teenager ended tragically with the young woman found fatally injured in a dumpster, nine storeys below her festively decorated Scarborough apartment.
The victim, 18, was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital after she was found just after 1 a.m. yesterday but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Police are treating the death as suspicious. Her name was not released.
"It was a love marriage -- he loved her," Subastan Sri said of his friend Thavakumar Selverajah, 28.
Sri said Selverajah and his wife -- who both hail from the same village in Sri Lanka -- fell for each other and then got their parents to arrange the marriage, which took place about seven months ago.
"I've known him for 10 years. He's a very good friend," said Sri, who works with Selverajah as a courier.
Sri and several friends had dropped by the couple's apartment at 99 Blackwell Ave. near Tapscott Rd. and Neilson Ave. after failing to raise their friend.
They found a police officer guarding the apartment door and police tape blocking the dumpster at the building's rear, directly below the couple's balcony.
"She was beautiful," building superintendent Mario Lara said, adding he'd just seen the petite woman last week merrily decorating her door for the holiday season.
The couple had lived in the building for less than a year and generally kept to themselves, neighbours said.
A Sun source said police seized security video that showed a man leaving the building just before police arrived. A trail of blood fell along the path the man took.
