IMMIGRATION: Migrant workers rush for asylum
On Sunday mornings, one of the bastions of the Venetian walls surrounding Nicosia's old city takes on the appearance of a street market in India or south-east Asia. This is where some of the many thousands of migrant workers and foreign students in Cyprus – from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, China and several east European countries – converge each week to buy, sell and barter. The goods on display range from cheap cotton dresses and pink fluffy toys, to out-sized suitcases and cut-price electrical appliances. read more
